Translate PangeaSeed Foundation’s Big Six ocean issues into eye-catching artwork that will translate across apparel design and marketing collateral.
For Earth Month, it was my true honor to partner with Volcom and my friends at PangeaSeed Foundation to create the Greetings From the Future line for Volcom’s D.I.Y. Machine. This collection is dedicated to bringing awareness to the health of our oceans, the support system of the planet and humankind, and specifically the Big Six issues facing it today.
This project meant reconciling two different voices in one campaign: Volcom's brand identity and PangeaSeed's environmental advocacy. Six distinct ocean issues, from plastic pollution to biodiversity loss, needed a single illustrated language that stayed scientifically accurate while still feeling like a Volcom D.I.Y. Machine drop.
The final outcome was a series that perfectly handles both jobs at once, accomplishing the goals of an awareness campaign and sales expectations of a brand collection.

THE BIG
SIX ISSUES
#01 - OCEAN ACIDIFICATION
Our emissions have caused surface ocean acidity to increase by 30%.
The ocean has absorbed 1/3 of our CO2 emissions since the industrial revolution.
As levels of atmospheric CO2 increase, so do the levels in the ocean.
Ocean acidity is expected to increase 100-150% more.
#02 - OVERFISHING
The UN estimates the world’s fish stocks may become commercially extinct by 2048.
More than 3 billion people depend on the ocean for protein.
80 million metric tons of fish are caught annually.
Ocean fish populations have been cut in half since 1970.
#03 - PLASTIC POLLUTION
By 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean.
At least 8 million tons of plastic leak into the ocean each year.
Every piece of plastic ever created still exists in some shape or form.
95% of plastic in the ocean comes from land.
#04 - COASTAL DEVELOPMENT
40% of the world’s population lives within 100km of the coast.
90% of all marine species call coastal habitats their home.
Coastal development increases pollution, erosion, habitat destruction, & dead zones.
Coastal areas are some of the most productive and biologically diverse on the planet.
#05 - WARMING SEAS
Warming threatens food security and increases extreme weather events.
The ocean has absorbed over 90% of excess heat since the 1970s.
75% of the world’s reefs are threatened by warming and acidifying water.
Rising temperatures cause coral bleaching and marine habitat loss.
#06 - BIODIVERSITY LOSS
By 2100, over half of all marine species may stand on the brink of extinction.
Despite covering over 70% of the planet, only less than 8% of oceans are protected.
Between 1970 and 2012, marine species populations have declined by 49%.
The ocean constitutes over 90% of habitable space on Earth.
