Sleepy in Seattle - Superfine Art Fair Recap

This honestly exceeded all of my expectations…

Artist Spring Break Jake's booth at Superfine Art Fair in Seattle.

My home for the weekend.

In a recent session, I was trying to explain to my therapist just how much creating art meant to me.

I’m not one to believe the cold, vast, empty universe has any kind of plan for us, or that there’s one single thing we’re meant to do, but the best I could explain it is that I honestly think I found the one thing that makes my specific brain with my specific wiring and chemistry the happiest; completely content and fulfilled.

And it’s painting.

Ever since my artist residency with Scalehouse Arts, I knew I had to pursue painting as a career, and the overwhelming response at Superfine Art Fair has undoubtedly been the push over the hill I needed to realize it really is possible.

Gotta have booth flair.

That said, I may still be recovering because this was an absolute whirlwind of an art trip deeper into the Pacific Northwest.

Superfine was a full four days in the district of Belltown at Block 41 in Seattle which I followed up with a couple days visiting galleries and hanging paintings in Portland.

To say I was exhausted when I got home is an understatement, but I also had a state of perpetual shock & gratitude to keep me going.

The love, stoke, support, and overall response to my art was better than I ever imagined and I still can’t believe how well the weekend went. I thought maybe I’d sell one piece over the four days, two if I was lucky, but to end up selling SEVEN panels, three originals on paper, and a few prints still completely blows my mind.

Playing for pinks.

But as great as it is to make sales because capitalism, probably the best part of the whole thing was connecting with the other artists. Being the total newbie, it meant the world that all my neighbors were so open & willing to offer advice, encouragement, and hype on top of celebrating sales with me! Plus it doesn’t hurt to be able to commiserate when times are slow or your feet start hurting.

Basically, this whole blog is a long-winded way to say it was completely worth it to schlep all my way-too-big paintings up north and I will absolutely be doing more art fairs, especially Superfines, in the near future.

The best Artist Support I know.

Love ‘em.

As always, massive thank you to Kait & Casper for being the best family I could ever ask for, to my sister-in-law Trish for housing the rowdy Kenobi crew in Seattle, to everyone behind the scenes at Superfine who bust ass to make rad events where dreams come true, and to all my awesome neighbors at the show who you should absolutely check out and support!

AND DUH THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO BOUGHT PAINTINGS
(INCLUDING THE ONES I FORGOT TO TAKE PHOTOS WITH)!
